Istanbul, Turkey

A good friend told me that Istanbul is his favorite city and that it’s a very special place. I’m usually more of a fan of smaller cities but I was worn out from my day job and I wanted an inexpensive trip I could do for New Years so somehow I tok his advice and went there. People were kind and much more laid back than what I experienced in Egypt, vendors approach you but they’ll leave you alone if you aren’t interested and negotiating with them is much smoother. There is so much to do and see (and did I mention EAT?) that I’m not sure any number of trips could ensure you reach every corner. I went with a backpack and came back with a duffle bag packed tightly full of ceramics, teas, sweets, and a few turkish towels, which are soft giant woven cotton that almost look like blankets. I recommend you do the same. I wouldn’t want to live there (terrible traffic and still too big of a city for my taste) but if anyone is heading to Istanbul just pick me up on your way, I won’t resist.
